Meme Expert Aidan Walker Warns of the Dangers of Incel Culture
Aidan Walker -- an expert on memes and internet culture -- says "incel culture" comes from a sense of hopelessness about the world ... and, social media eggs the negativity on.
0:50 Q - "One of the things that just fascinated me as I listened to you over the weekend was talking about incel culture and just about, you know, how lost, especially it seems young men are, and you know that they are unable to really form relationships and that there is this misogyny and anger and hopelessness. To me, this really represents a threat to humanity. I mean, I don't know how alarmed you are by it, but as I listened to you, it alarmed me."
1:28 A - "I'm alarmed by it as well. I think it is important to stress that like not all men who are in hopeless situations go on to do horrible things, and I think we all know that and it's important to remember that like all the young men in our own lives aren't like this necessarily. But to me the kind of the desolation and sadness of young men is as much a symptom as it is a cause, I see things like the affordability crisis, or climate change, or just like how fucked things feel lately. As being kind of the root driver of this, and this is an expression of that.
2:44 A - "And I think when you have a bunch of people who kind of exile themselves from the mainstream and part of doing that exile is to post the very racist or sexist meme that kind of puts them on the other side of that bridge with the freak brotherhood that wants to hurt people. Like once people go over there, that amplifies and the platforms make money from that.
Huh, but I thought all the major tech platforms had driven all le evil inkies off their platforms with their rigorous TOS? Otherwise, why would we all be congregating on this forum?
