Mechanics vs core gameplay vs non-core game elements

Can you enjoy a game even if the mechanics are bad?

Hm... not too long ago I had gotten this idea in my head that what really mattered about a game was the raw mechanics.

FPS or hack 'n' slash or... whatever it may be.

And yeah this is important but... a game expands a lot further than that.

First of all the "core gameplay" of a game alone expands further than this apparently. It includes the other core gameplay mechanics like exploration, collecting items or puzzle-solving.

And... I disagree that core gameplay is all that matters. When the things that don't come under that umbrella include music, story, world-building, art style... these things are SO IMPORTANT and can easily carry a game for me.

I hope that made some sense anyway! I'd be interested in hearing people's thoughts on it!
