Carney is going to borrow hundreds of billions from European bankers who he has deep ties with, and will invest it in direct housing construction. This is classic industrial policy and how post-WW2 Canada built millions of homes. It’s also how Sweden, Denmark, and Finland keep their housing prices very low compared to income levels. The federal government will then own these houses/apartments and rent them out to people, and if they ever feel like it, they can always sell them off to private equity firms or REITS.
It’s brilliant and it’s going to make Canada a very very very desirable place to live. The program will bring on a lot of debt but the GDP growth will more than offset it, resulting in a lower Debt/GDP ratio. The interest on the debt will be largely paid for by taxes on the wealthy. People who currently own houses (boomers) will get fucked because their mortgage payments will increase as the deficits levitate interest rates, and their properties will decrease in price due to higher supply. Millions of young Canadian NEETs will be trained in the skilled trades like forestry and construction to make this happen, they will be recruited into high-paying careers that allow them to build wealth. Carney is already cutting the NEETbux and is basically telling NEETs that if they want those sweet cheques they need to join this public works program.
If this does what it’s supposed to do, Canada could easily become one of the wealthiest countries on the planet. Canada is already wealthy in every way except one… rent. Wages are sky high but rent takes up such a large % that it’s hard to do anything, if Carney can solve that then Canada will be a Western UAE.
