The growing hostility towards data centers is a major plot point for why the project is given a greenlight and receives (indirect) funding from oligarchs. The data centers are particularly strategic, because besides being the "brain power" for the AIs (in addition to local hosting), the data centers produce lots of heat. The waste heat from these clusters is normally a big problem, requiring lots of water, which leads to the water usage criticisms. A tundra or Arctic datacenter can just use the outside cold air to cool itself, and the waste heat can be used via central heating to heat residential, commercial, and hydroponics/agricultural buildings. Heat is actually a valuable commodity in the Arctic, so it won't be wasted.
This is a Western phenomena. This is not true in Russia, China, the Islamic world, or South Asia. The female empowerment garbage is something that will go away when the West's economic and geopolitical power degrades (which is currently happening as we speak).

You know, this is one of the premises of the book I'm writing. The male colony in the remote Russian Far East is tasked with building a massive tidal power plant to provide cheap, constant green energy to power datacenters, smelters, ammonia (hydrogen economics), tritium (from seawater lithium-6) and natural gas refining. Traditional pure FIFO workforces can't be used to build such a thing (the scale is too large, requires at least 100k workers), gulag slave labor no longer exists, and no normie wants to live there due to the extreme and hostile climate, so surplus males from around the world are given a certain level of political autonomy to build the project over two decades in exchange for sending a check back to the investors/central government. The male separatist angle and new but expensive reproductive and AI companion technologies are the ideological and physical hook that attracts these men to the project. I have an older thread from a few years ago when I first thought of the idea.
