The Christians say “God is love”, and since God exists only as an illusion, that would seem to dispose of the issue immediately and straightforwardly. But in more detail: What Christians mean by love in this case is ἀγάπη, a selfless and unconditional affection which purports to be eternal, a metaphysical power existing independently of ourselves. It’s that kind of love I’m denying the existence of. It’s my contention that everything else that passes for love is conditional, and in effect, contractual; and in so far as it is contractual, it differs in no meaningful way from any other kind of contract. For example, a parent’s “love” for a child. or a child’s for its parents, is in each case conditioned on certain forms of behavior by the “love” object. If those behaviors cease, then the “love” terminates. Exactly the same in the case of a lover’s “love” for a paramour. Human “love” is always conditional and temporary; a contract to which each party holds only so long as they believe it to be to their advantage, but which is terminated as soon as one or the other party doesn’t deliver the goods contracted for. “I will always love you” is the oldest lie in the world. To believe otherwise is to be taken in by an illusion.
