In school, I had a colleague that was very confident and athletic, slightly taller than me at the time. The positive outlook this guy had on things was out of this world, he could look at any objectively shitty situation and find some positive in it.
However, he had a speech impediment, and was very ugly (uglier than even me). Aquiline nose, unibrow, inflated lips, huge forehead, also very hairy early on. The subject of his appearance was kept relatively subtle until middle school, sometimes they would make jokes about him looking like a monkey.
But around 7th grade, it hit him like a fucking boeing 777. IIRC this was after a "game" where the guys rated the girls from 1 to 10 and vice versa (I avoided both rating the girls, and knowing what my rating was). He was probably rejected frequently before, and finally put 2 and 2 together. I found him crying, and when I asked him what was wrong, he told me none of the girls liked him because he was ugly. I went up to the girls to ask them what happened (I pretended to not know), and they replied "Yeah, we don't like him... what, are YOU gonna be his friend or something? Then never talk to us again". This for a simple question.
After that he had ups and downs. He eventually got an ugly GF during college, and I'm not sure how many humiliation rituals it took for him. Eventually the few relationships he had... ended. Last I heard of him, he was living with a boyfriend. Perhaps he was bi from the start (there was gay porn in his browsing history during his teens), and/or it was some adaptation because he couldn't get a GF.
I also don't know if he had covert illnesses like I did, although he was pretty fucking athletic so idk.
