He's an angry brute who oppresses the land. The ones who have to take him out represent good traits such as courage, wisdom, etc. Everything he is not. The ending of that video is based and shows what would have happened to a woman if she behaved like that in harsher times. Nowadays women don't need the work and protection of men, at least not directly. So they can do whatever they want. That didn't work before. They had to make compromises.

To be historically accurate, both of the original games came out in the 1980s, and were developed in JAPAN (you do the math). Mario himself first appeared on Atari and arcade games as a both a good guy and a bad guy in Donkey Kong, with Kong having to save his son from the evil Mario, and Mario having to save the princess from the evil Kong.
I'm over 40. When I was a kid, there was a Mario Brothers / Zelda cartoon show. In Mario, video game and cartoon, the princess was named Princess Toadstool. Not very alluring, but that was the name. In the Zelda cartoon, Link was the perpetual simp, always declaring his love for Zelda, with Zelda herself always holding back but using her charm when she wanted Link to do something for her. In one episode, Zelda finally agreed to give him a kiss for his good work. They were standing my a hillside, and just at that moment, the ground gave way and Link slipped and fell into a ditch. There was another episode where Link was like a ghost. He wasn't dead, but he was in spirt form somehow and only Zelda could see him. The bad guy surmised that the only way someone could actually see Link in spirit form is they were in love with him. They always played up the tension between Link and Zelda without Zelda ever giving in, or Link losing out somehow just before Zelda would give in.
There was also a Nintendo breakfast cereal. Open the box, there were two half-sleeves. The Mario cereal tasted like Trix, the Zelda cereal tasted like blueberry Kicks.
I hate getting all nostalgic, but can't help it at my age.
