Laughter signals higher social status, an observation made by the observer indicates to them a failure on the subjects part. Laughter is a great way to signal 'not only did I just observe your failure, I'm going to signal to you that I find it below me, by this rhythmic pulse of my vocal cords I shall signal to those around that I am of higher competence than thou.'

In cases of group laughter, it's a chain reaction of vocalisations. This allows an entire group to push a single individual to the bottom of the group, thereby raising all the other group members relative social positions.

the more I read it, the more seems like signaling of weakness, submission, agreeableness. fear-driven act.
of course, someone laughing at you probably because they see you as inferior, a joke, still, laughing and smiling too often is pretty much my first point.
