I started reading the nhk novels and Yamazaki is very relatable to me.
Yamazakis canon height is 5'6, which is my exact height. In modern day where "tall = attractive default", Yamazaki exists as a shortcel where he is not tall enough to get auto-passes in normie social/dating scenes.
He openly embodies the extreme "3DPD" (3D pig disgusting) mindset, sharing extreme material with Satou and spiraling into addictions that show exploration of escapism gone wrong. For a 5'6" shortcel who has felt invisible or rejected IRL and doubled down on waifus/hentai as "superior," Yamazaki's rage-fueled justifications feel very relatable.
the novel version of yamazaki is the late-night existential stare-down in the mirror. Same height, same cope, same eventual surrender but alot less filtered. For me, the novel version of yamazaki feels like it's reading right out of my mind.
