There are thousands of theaters in the US, and the decision to up security is based solely on individual theaters. With extreme stuff like this, it is most likely a hoax, but it is a ballsy move to actually send a threat like this -- Tor isn't 100% secure. Whoever did it is no ordinary person, and will probably do something at some point.
