He would usually lure young men to his house and get them drunk and high and put handcuffs on them under the guise of performing a magic trick. He would then rape them and do some type of bizarre BDSM things and then strangle them to death. At other times he would use chloroform. One of his first would be victims was a 15 year old who he had hired to work for his construction company. He was handcuffed and when Gacy left the room, he managed to free himself. He turned out to be a high school wrestler so he was able to turn the tables, overpower Gacy and handcuff him. He then let him go rather than killing him or turning him over to the police. After that, he ended up getting over 30 more victims.
Eventually Gacy was caught and later sentenced to death and executed for his crimes.
