While Japanese can be hard because it is such a far departure from English and other European languages, with a bit of time commitment each day you can learn it fast. I went from an absolute beginner to JLPT n1 under a year. It is a lot of time investment but as a wagecel, all I got outside of work is free time.

That site is a great jumping-off point. They have reviews of all kinds of books and materials, as well as stuff of their own. Weebs ignore it because they are obsessed with "muh immersion and shieet".
I do not disagree with you, but I don't think it's gatekeep-worthy tbh, it's basically a stable (tofugu made wanikani after all and they're both very popular among normies).
I have a few qualms with immersion only, but I think at some point it's a thing that one has to do when learning any language. Personally I don't have much time to study japanese but I used to study some linguistics off of the Frellesvig or the Chamberlain and I think it greatly helped. Also did some 500 kanji by myself and a couple of Anki decks.
But at the end of the day, it depends on your goals. My goal is to just broaden my general knowledge and be able to read in Japanese so I'm not very particular on my methods. I really feel like all these normiescum in the jp learning community pushing this "just immerse" thingy are ruining the point of language learning, and hobbies in general, which is to embark on a personal journey of sorts, cultivate the hobbies, and have fun and maybe grow as a person while doing it. It's all performative nowadays.

I agree that language learning, as well as learning anything in general, is supposed to be fun. YouTubers are extremely annoying in both their methods, and their attitudes about how a method should be as "fast" and "correct" as possible. The reality is that one is never finished with learning anything, and that different methods fit different people. Goals vary as well, like you said. I think I will write my own little guide on learning Japanese later.

Japanese linguistics is pretty based. I occasionally reference Hasegawa for general information and Vovin’s book for classical Japanese, though the latter is perhaps more easily found on Tofugu. They really do have articles for everything; it’s sad they stopped posting, though.

Jewtube videos aimed at natives are more zoomnigger attention span friendly though, so at least one can learn 古文 that way.

Many new features are useless shit nobody asked for, and it especially sucks that there’s no way to skip the vocab slop they keep adding to the lower levels (unless you manually select your lessons each time, jfl).

I read some 20 chapters of Ijiranaide Nagatoro-san and mined about 1700 words off of that alone. It's not rocket science and it's mostly just a performative normie trap. The principal advantage WaniKani has over RTK is that one need not spend any effort or time creating mnemonics from scratch. This approach in my opinion streamlines the learning process for the beginner, but gradually begins to lose its luster the higher up you go. (There are also cases where the meaning of a kanji is simply difficult to glean from the meanings of compounds containing it. I’ve always found nonzero value in memorizing individual kanji, even just for enrichment purposes.) But yeah, if this is the only thing they’re “selling” I completely agree that the product is overpriced; Anki is the way to go.
Also, 1700 words is a lot for Nagatoro, lmao. I guess it’s reasonable assuming each chapter averages about 20-21 pages, but it makes me wonder if the rom-com manga started discussing world politics.

By the way, が always marks the subject of the sentence, no matter what. There’s a different nominative case marker for subordinate clauses (e.g. The man who copes with anime), but in any case ‘ga’ cannot serve as a direct object particle. Mainstream textbook authors seem to tie themselves in knots trying to explain this (or avoid the issue entirely), but in a sentence like
リンゴ ‘apple’ ought to be labelled as the subject. The apple is doing the “action” of being liked/being enjoyable.
