there are some important things to note based on the setting:

>it was a movie theatre with little exits in a dark room, housing 200 people
>james holmes was heavily armored
>nobody else in the room had a gun
>police were not as responsive or prepared for this kind of attack
>everyone inside the room was either confused, unaware, or frozen in shock

the only thing that stopped him from more kills was his gun not working. otherwise he had all the conditions needed for a high kill count
