My mom is pretty smart, she got a bachelor's degree in chemistry. In all honesty, mental math is an almost useless skill, and I am saying this as someone who studies engineering, the ability to do calculations in your head is pointless when you can just carry a calculator with you. The key is more in understanding the theory behind the calculations.

Mental calculations are basically only useful for showing off. The only times I've ever personally used mental math are when I happen to come up with an idea for a solution to a problem I've been having trouble with, while on the bus or walking home, and it's not convenient to use a calculator, so I do the simpler stuff in my head until I get home to finish the rest.

I second this. Also studying engineering, mental maths is useless nowadays. I only use it to flex my maths skills. It’s funny asking people to multiply two digit numbers in their head + watching them get confused.
