I've never played DOOM before... suggestions on how to break the "Doom-hymen?"

This. Classic Doom 2 is a must and Eternal is also really good, but just isn't on the same level as 2016.

My recommendation would be to start with Doom 1 and 2 using the GZDoom source port. If you wish, I could give you a list of mods that might lead to a better experience.

Old school doom series is awesome and so is Doom 64. The Doom movie with the rock is shit. There was talk back in the 90's about Arnold Swartsnigger staring in the film but it didn't happen. Not really a fan of the newer games because I feel like they nailed the formula in the originals. PSX version of Doom is good as well because of the music and the inclusion of Doom 2 enemies and and the super shotgun in Doom 1.

Doom 3 was kind of boring until they went to hell. Walking around those delta labs got kind of repetitive. They should of made it so the bodies stayed in place once they were dead. It killed the immersion.

EH loved DOOM 2, his thoughts were consumed by the franchise by his senior year.

Classic Doom is the best place to start. Doom, Doom II and Doom 64 have more depth than a lot of modern FPS games.

Doom 3 is a bit of a departure from the series in terms of gameplay, but it's a fairly good horror game in its own right.

I got tired of nuDoom. It has a decent combat loop, but I find its tone and atmosphere to be shallow. It feels like an MCU film at times.
