I wouldn't say that they don't matter at all, since that would oversimplify it very much, the way you express yourself and handle yourself can command respect as well, but that only comes when it's coupled with size. Otherwise people will disregard your points and opinions quite quickly. But it makes proving others wrong with only words and watching them crumble and try to find a way out or devolve into ad hominems all the more enjoyable.
