It's a surragate for real-life achievements. Speedrun community isn't that big, and mostly composed of people with surpluse of free time. They either don't have any major life achievements, so they compensate for it by holding some internet world-record, or if they are attractive; They don't really struggle in real-world, then they use to feel the some sense of accomplishment.
