No but it’s advisable. It prevents any lurkers (ie Feds) from finding your IP address

Not for me, you can use yandex if Google blocks the site

Probably the DNS your ISP set for you is blocking the site

change to Google or cloudflare DNS in IP settings.

Either 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8
