Why people resort to insults about looks and why they're so devastating especially in front of others ? Because looks are objective and fundamental for mental health. Let's analyse other insults that have nowhere the same overpowered almost cheap destroying effect :
Idiot, retarded, ignorant, asshole etc
What do they have in common?
They're subjective. Everyone is an idiot to someone and everyone is ignorant on something. For some cultures something is rude while for others is not. Being told those things doesn't tell anything about yourself but everything about him. Not being liked by a specific person is normal and happened to philosophers, conquerors, kings and great men in general through all history.
But being called ugly doesn't tell anything about the insulter (his ideas, morals etc) but everything about you. Your face is ugly to everyone regardless of their individualities.
You can't wash it away with "well that's your opinion" cause it's a fact and not an opinion in the first place. Same for short, if you're 4'10" and get called gnome you can't answer with "I don't care about what you think" cause it was never about what he thinks but about cold harsh reality.
They also tell you ugly cause no one wants to be ugly or short and they're publicly pointing at something everyone that lives doesn't wanna be while you can be proud to be an "asshole" if that means sticking to your guns.
And lastly you can't answer back with thee same coin as everyone would see the cope. You can't answer "look who's talking" to Chad while you can answer back "you're the idiot" if he's so fair to not go at your weak spot (very unlikely lol).
By being called ugly any argument is lost and whatever you say you're now the bitter loser who can use only what they perceive as empty words to deny that the king is naked.
That's why the only thing you can do at that point is resorting to sheer violence at the cost of getting into legal troubles, indifference is a meme.
