Problem with genetic engineering is in human nature, the goal of G.E. is to fix the flaws in human nature, however, this is a bit like giving an alcoholic the keys to the car to drive to an AA clinic, do you think he's going to the clinic or to the liquor store?
I'd suggest reading Ted Kaczynski's book "Industrial Society and it's Future." The whole concept of government (as it relates to human nature) is another huge black pill, I don't trust giving them that kind of power.

Genetic engineering companies would probably be controlled by other sinister corporations and governments to do their bidding. While hopeful parents would think they are giving their child better genes and thus more freedom to do what they wish, in reality their child would just be a better slave to society.
