Inbreeding is definitely detrimental. The risk with inbreeding is that it increases the chance that detrimental recessive traits will be present in the child.

Many people carry a single copy of rare recessive traits that were mutated at some point in their ancestry (these random mutations have negative effects more often than not). The likelihood of two relatives carrying these same recessive traits (and therefore the likelihood of their child inheriting these two copies, causing the trait to be expressed) is far higher than the likelihood of two strangers carrying these same traits.

The fact that inbreeding is detrimental is evident when you consider that most people have an inherent aversion to it. Most people aren't attracted to their siblings or parents by default as an evolved mechanism against inbreeding.

it was studied and it seemed actually optimal for offspring quality to be at around 3rd cousin distance. not too far or too close.

There's no way they're going to find a new unrelated person everytime to mate with. Also think about small island nations, they had to start and continue their lineage somehow.

The royal families and Rothschilds are supposedly inbred, they don't look like the inbred abominations shown in media. The Egyptian pharaohs were also inbred. Maybe they are gatekeeping the practice for their own benefit or there is some missing puzzle piece that we don't know.

could definitely be a case by case basis but generally as a standard i would personally only say cousins is a good idea sibling on sibling stuff seems too high risk for low reward
