I know that before the modern Age, women depended upon men to survive in the world. Most women married a man from their local vicinity, but times are much different now. That’s why I’m wondering this.

People usually just had their looksmatches. That's why the term "in your league" has been used for forever.
But here’s the thing. Asian men are rated as the least attractive while their women are rated as the most attractive. How was that looksmatching?

Not really. Human nature is the same as it was then, there's nothing special about the "olden times". Attractive women have always known they were attractive and never had the need to settle for ugly or normal guys, unless the guys were rich of course.
