Pretty much everyone in western first world countries have their basic needs met. Even the jobless are getting subsistence level pay.

Compared to third world countries maybe but it's relative. It's still hard for the jobless to not be homeless in places like the UK and America. And public assistance is easier to get for women and children than for single men with no family.

Netherlands is like one of the few exceptions. First world countries in Northern Europe with generous safety nets aren't all western countries. Also in the long run their pension and safety net systems aren't completely sustainable as is. Particularly not with increased migrants coming to those countries.
