It prevents a nation from developing their own food and when a supply disruption inevitably occurs, such as due to the pandemic, high interest rates, an war, etc., the people in the dependent nation will starve. Even relatively stable African nations are facing the worst food security problem they have in decades as food shipments have been disrupted since 2020.
