If someone comes across a dog that's hostile, doesn't trust anyone, and growls and bites at them, they assume "it's the owner's fault," as in, external influences must have been bad for this dog and now, as a result, it's ornery, angry, and miserable. And they feel some basic sympathy for the dog.
I happen to be the same way, and it's not because of external influences, no, it's because internally, I'm a piece of shit. They'll treat a dog better than me, and then I get family telling me "Oh don't be so hard on yourself." I'm not being hard on myself, other people are! I get treated like a subhuman, because of the way I was born!
