The fundamental difference is that they have started from solid mathematical foundations. In the same way that children are taught algebra, arithmetic, geometry and other knowledge. No matter how much IQ you may have in spatial vision, linguistics and pattern identification, if there is no educational basis, you do nothing.

Yes and no.
While this type of thing has always been present, it was much less in the 1920-50's, and before that as well. I don't want to change the language and say "too lost". That's too vague. I want make it specific and give the reason for why their behavior is the way it is. The explanations come from the Humanities fields. They are doing a sort of game with each other to impress their wives, girlfriends and colleagues. They are not interested in what constitutes practical science. Engineers are different, they have to be more practical. However, all the talking heads in "Big Science" like Cosmology and Particle Physics who are spouting out theories are either trying to see who can back up their claims with huge math equations or they are just simply doing Art. Sometimes both. They don't care about hard Science anymore than they do, say, Economics. Its usually about who has the bigger more elegant claim on the underpinnings of the Universe.
Just watch any YouTube video for big science explanation now days and it's a bit nauseating. They have nothing concrete to say, so they say everything and anything all at once.
Dark Energy masturbation is the best example. There are more theoreticians than workable theories. Each new one adding on some ridiculous superhero style masturbatory crap to the previous idea. The guy who narrates the Cool Worlds channel sometimes, he is a good example. He is a gigaChad who is completely and utterly unable to stop jacking off on screen. Yeah, you'll do triple (and beyond) in multivariate calculus. But it's not really that interesting, there is nothing stopping you from doing triple integrals with calc 2 knowledge. Triple integrals come up as a way to compute the volume of a closed surface. What is really interesting in calc 3 is that the methods of doing calculus in 3 dimensions are not all that specific to 3 dimensions; they are generalizable to n dimensions. Hence the title is usually multivariate calculus.

I have an economics degree myself and if you read anything published by economists it's all highly mathematical with only limited real world data. I am convinced that a low IQ store owner can probably create a better working model of economics than the people working in our central banks today, especially as they seem completely ignorant of what drives our economic forces or the subjective nature of inflation or deflation in certain areas (which they all try to compound into general inflation which is heavily skewed due to a small number of sectors driving almost all inflation). With economics the myth created by these mathsturbators makes people believe that they are actively getting poorer despite literally having more purchasing power in every sector except for like 3 (largely due to government manipulation subsidised because these poor models make it into policy planning).
