A number of years back on another forum, some anti-religious guy was going on about how horrible religion was. My counter argument was that society needs something, even if a backdrop, to guide it. There will always be religious fanatics and there were always be people who do whatever they want. But, for the masses, religion helps steer things in a pro-society way.

He got defensive, called me a religioustard. I told him, you and I both know it's bullshit. We can be moral and ethical without this mythology. But most normies can't. Hence, the need for religion, not the woo-woo side, but the moral impositions.

I think that's what people who get hung up on religion either way fail to understand. It's not about the magic, but the moral implications. Normies need to be told what to do as an extra reiteration that something they may want to do is "wrong," or "a sin" (i.e. against society).
