If gaming had begun with 3D graphics... would we still have 2D games?

I actually don't even know what I think about this.
I mean, I think we'd still have 2D puzzle games and stuff because they're based on board games, paper, stuff like that.
But as for games like Sonic 2 and R-Type... hm. Probably? As part of experimentation. But less.
