Genetic diseases still persist. There are attributes that autists have that are positive in milder proportions, thus maybe saving it on a population level where slight errors will still commonly cause autism.

Autism is complex as fuck, has many forms, you can't realy explain something like this
look up gene expression. you dont have to be autistic to have autism in your genetics.

Mental illnesses are complex phenotypes, which means you have genotypical effects (multiple genes/loci involved with varying degrees of influence with both recessive/dominant alleles, epistasis/interaction between alleles and other factors), environmental effects and genotype-environment-interactions to get one.

Also, maybe the autists that did reproduce had other qualities that could compensate for the disadvantage of autism. Alot of autists have high iqs for example, because the low iq autists didnt reproduce

i thought a lot of times autism results from the parents being too old, from a mutation of dna that happens through age of the sperm and eggs.
so maybe any set of parents can create an autist child regardless of the original state of the genes.
