Reminds me of a movie I once saw, "Zardoz", dealt with a community of immortals in a land of otherwise postapocalyptic savagery. Crimes there were punished by having someone lose their youth and become a senile old fuck for an allotted time.
Having to live as an utterly undesirable would be a transformative experience for everyone unfamiliar with it, could see VR actually allowing such punishment to become reality.
