If you were to be colonized by one of the great powers in the past, which one would you choose? Britain? France? Or...the Portuguese/Spanish?
I am not a fan of colonization itself, and I certainly do not try to defend it. But it is important of examine certain details of it
I believe the worst outcome would be the Iberians.
No, it is not because of their torture methods or diseases, or destruction. None of that.
They unleashed a weapon more destructive than 5 tsar bomba welded together....in 1500s!
You would think I'm talking about some kind of mythic blades, samurai swords, or flamethrowers. Nope.
I'm talking about integration.
While the British forced the locals to live segregated, the Spanish/Portuguese embraced it. In fact, in one incident:
The British may have looked more oppressive with their segregation, but if you looked deeper, it was mutually benefitting for even "racist" places like Rhodesia. African native tribes were able to get healthcare and education and live their own way of life.
The same cannot be said about the Spanish. Not only did they ruined the demographics, they also made things worse for themselves. eventually, the elite Spanish in these places were also being mixed themselves and ending their priviliages.
After all, my words are just my words, but data speaks for themselves.
There is not a single colony of the Iberians where race mixing was embraced en masse, is prosperous. (Macau is an rare exception, being homogeneous).
To this day, the whole Latin America is just a catholic "we wuz Spanish" larp fest without their own organic language, culture, race and values. Because after the demographic destruction, this is all they have going for them.
The Iberians have failed spectaturely in their "civilizing missions". The brutal native Americans, I believe, could be tamed to be less violent, as seen in current USA native American population.
The Spanish, racemixed them with whites and blacks. Creating a super violent group.
Compare this to former British colonies where many retained their race, language, and culture.
