He was in town for Thanksgiving.

Apparently it really is true that "Cheers" is to British people what "Thanks" is to Americans. Something casually mumbled as a courtesy to strangers if you have to talk to them. They say it as casually as an American might say "Eh" or ",Yep..."

Moral of the story: The only real way to learn how to translate/interpret language comparisons/contrasts is to actually talk to people. You have to understand what people mean by words. The feeling they put behind them.

"Cheers" is a common greeting over here. I'm surprised that Americans are shocked about how different both our countries are.
