One time when I was 15 I was looking for a part time job, and I had a potential opportunity at this one place but it was really far away. And I didn't have bus fare because I had no job, so I had to walk. And to save time, I cut across what looked, to me, like a vacant lot. Surrounded by a fence in disrepair. I hopped the fence and continue on my shortcut.
But eventually this old guy catches up to me, and he's all "Hey that was you who hopped that fence back there, right?" Yes, that was me. And then, I'll never forget it again, he says to me "I almost shot your ass." And he wasn't saying it like "I almost made a horrible mistake," he was making a threat. He was saying "Stay off my property. Stay away from my shed." That was apparently his... farm or something? Or he was worried about me stealing from his shed? He goes into detail about how painful he was going to make my death, how he was gonna bleed me out slowly. I remember being really angry because what the fuck do I care about his fuckin' shed? Now I hope he gets robbed. But all I did was apologize and promise never to go near his farm or shed again.
It took me a few days, but my fear gave way to anger. That I didn't say what I wanted to say to that old guy. He's almost certainly dead now. Probably interned beneath the shed he loved so much. But damn, I wish I could've told him, nobody cares about his shed. That he's a lonely man clinging to cheap broken things and he's gonna die angry.
