Churchill has a quote that Russia is a riddle within a riddle. But for me, Britain is a mystery within a mystery.
Every time I look at the Victorian era, I always thought, if you have the largest empire and many colonies, but a huge mass of your inhabitants live in poverty.
Each time, the British showed unscrupulousness in choosing allies, choosing the strongest player on the continent to beat him with the rest. The British fought against Napoleon and supported all other powers against him, even Russia's victory in 1812 was largely due to British financing of the Russian Empire. Then the British fought with the Turks and the French against Russia in the Crimea, then they fought with the Russian Empire against the central powers in World War I, and later fought with the USSR against the Third Reich.
