Most broken toes are treated with:
  • Buddy taping the injured toe to the one next to it.
  • Wearing a stiff-soled shoe or walking boot.
  • Rest, ice, and elevation.
A cast is uncommon and is usually reserved for more serious injuries, such as:
  • A badly displaced fracture.
  • Multiple broken toes.
  • A fracture involving the big toe that is unstable or extends into the joint.
  • Certain complex or open fractures.
Healing typically takes 4–6 weeks for smaller toes and 6–8 weeks for the big toe.

If the toe is severely deformed, there's an open wound, the pain is severe, or the toe becomes numb, pale, or cold, it should be assessed promptly.

That's possible. A broken toe can still be painful a year later, especially if:
  • It healed in a poor position (malunion).
  • The fracture involved the joint, leading to stiffness or arthritis.
  • The toe was repeatedly irritated by footwear.
  • There was another injury (e.g. ligament or tendon damage) rather than just a simple fracture.
Persistent pain after a year isn't typical for a straightforward toe fracture, but it does happen.

If the pain is ongoing, worsening, or affecting walking, it suggests the injury didn't fully recover or there's another underlying issue.
