A cat will usually avoid you or run away; it will only scratch if you disrespect its personal space or annoy it.

From the experience of living with dogs my entire life its the opposite, you pretty much need one or more in some towns so you dont get raided by bears a few times a year, ive seen 50 pound dogs chase bears up trees if it goes onto their property.

They are loyal enough to do that for you and your property for cheap food thatbarely keeps them alive, and if the owner abuses them they will keep protecting.
