The thing about knowing a few martial arts moves is that even when unarmed you are not totally defenseless.

Granted unarmed gun defense is difficult but it's possible if you know the weakness of the weapon platform. (How to make misfires and jams on demand)

Knives are far more difficult to defend against, but they too can be defeated if you are fast enough and calm enough and fully understand their usage.

The thing is, there's no one fighting style or tool that mogs all. But by having a basic knowledge of all of them you can hold you're own.

The only book to read/ study/ learn, is "the book of five rings." By myamoto mushashi.

It has the basic principals of all martial art skills in a tiny package.

Even a gun should be enough against most people would back down against that unless they have one themselves and even then most people dont have the balls to get into a shootout

It should be obvious: there can be situations in which you have no weapons available and no choice but to use your hands to defend yourself. Besides, using a weapon against an unarmed person in a fight and killing them can land you with a manslaughter charge.
