This feels awesome. XD

It takes me back to my favouritest year ever - 2002 :D

So anywho erm... it might be the hardware being old or it might be Linux's drivers idk.

But... I kind of like it! VGA even LOOKS different to HDMI on screen. It's deffo less clear and... it's weird. I'll look it up. It FEELS analogue.

Aw man, this feels so cool and retro - I almost want to go back further :D

hehe

Has anyone else here used old PCs? Maybe mainly the boomer incels like me! ^_^

based, growing up in the 2010 and stuff I remember my mom bought me a monitor that was 1368x768, it was always the weirdest resolution to me, I only replaced it last year kek

Many retro games look better on intended CRT screens with VGA.

I'm old enough that my first monitors were those long VGA inputs with tons of pins.

I had a WXGA laptop for a long time as well. It really is a weird resolution.

Yeah I'm super tempted to track down a CRT monitor and just lean into this screen resolution but... hm. They're tricky to find these days. There is a computer shop not too far from here that has lots of old stuff... possibly I could find one there. It would probably crush this weak little desk under its weight though XD

Ah wow interesting resolution! I guess that's low resolution widescreen?

To be honest that would be better for me atm because this monitor is widescreen! The 1024 res is just in the middle of it, not stretched or anything like that.

Yeah, I went from 1368x768 and it seemed that this res was really stretched kek. I always tell fellow brocels about the res and they have no clue it existed most people played on either 720p or some res like that

Huh, chatgpt tells me that both are 16:9, just like 1080p :)

ChatGPT also informed me that... there are lots of ways that VGA looks different to HDMI. One of them is there does tend to be a bit of "noise" and other things that give away that it's an analogue signal. Also it seems to struggle a bit with aligning the display, which takes me back too! Sometimes it's squished or not aligned correctly in other ways.

It's odd! Lots of things I'd forgotten used to happen all the time!

I use VGA too.

If you're curious about how VGA cards work the video below builds up the VGA vsync, hsync signals from logic circuits and flip flops (for the counters) on a breadboard.

This video handles the VGA red, green and blue signals.

Here is a recent story about gamers who rescued the last of the worlds biggest CRT in Japan.

I do think it's cool to use analogue technology sometimes. It has lots of great quirks to it that digital doesn't have.

Sometimes digital is TOO clean, I guess! It can lack soul.

I do have an ATX case here that I plan to build a PC into that will be able to output at regular 1080p via HDMI but... I'm not in a huge hurry.

That's cool that you're into electronics though! I've never really looked into electronics much (as computing is a somewhat different thing ofc) but the more I think about computer hardware and look at it... I realise how amazing and intricate the electronics are, even in older machines like the one I'm using. The motherboard still looks really amazing.

Even '80s and '90s tech... it's all pretty incredible when you really look at it and think about what's going on inside those magic boxes! People just often take it all for granted these days :)

That's a interesting new years resolution bro
