My theory is that it's because the Japanese spirit is permanently shattered, both military and economically. They had two chances to rule the world, but failed epically in both. Either being beaten by the Yankees with nuclear bombs or the Chinks with superior economic production, now they live day to day with little confidence because deep down, they know that they're conquered by a supposed 'friend' who makes them look like a joke.
