Huh. Listening to motorway noise while I'm going to sleep relaxes me

How weird is that? XD

I tried it last night with one of those meditation audio tracks on youtube. Most are natural I think, but many are the sounds of cars going past at night, rain hitting your car, the sound of a passenger plane as you sit in it, etc.

The motorway one was surprisingly calming to me. I feel lonely when I sleep at night and I think it just creates the impression of (subtle, calming) human activity near me, which decreases loneliness making me feel like I can sleep more easily.

Just wanted to mention this on here for opinions and in case it helps anyone else - it would be cool to hear about other people's experiences with stuff like this. I'm naturally an extrovert so I think my need to be around human activity is higher than an introvert's would be.

Later guys :)

Where I live now is fairly wooded so I dont hear the constant vehicles like in town but I used to like listening to it. Gave me the feeling of not being so alone I guess? Plus I liked the lights in the windows. Now I basically sleep with a game/ movie on and a light cuz I cant stand to total darkness...
Never did try using natural sounding audio tho.

White noise helps a lot of people sleep I cant sleep without a fan blowing or my TV on

Probably the fact you're in control of it makes it so. I live on a main road and it is not fucking relaxing. Noise pollution is real. We had a clock that ticked loudly and it almost gave me an aneurysm.

I agree that being in control of it helps a lot. I've lived on busy roads twice and yes the noise is much more intrusive when you can't control things like volume, and also I don't like the air pollution either.

Also, I like to imagine I'm sleeping in somewhere like a truck cabin (those ones for truckers) as I guess it makes me feel more connected to the world around me. I'm not a big fan of big thick walls, double glazing, all that. It's good when the weather gets cold but it can also be very isolating because it seals you in like a cell :o

The pollution is obscene. Living anywhere remotely near a main road exponentially increases your risk of contracting almost every disease. If I move out before I rope I want to move somewhere with lovely, clean air.

Yeah, I sometimes get claustrophobic and almost a minor panic attack when I try to sleep in complete darkness and silence. I almost always have some audio stimulus, Youtube or something, when falling asleep.

Well, definitely don't rope ._.

But yeah erm, it's good to be away from main roads. I lived RIGHT on a busy road once. As in it went right past my bedroom window and there was no escaping from the traffic. I had an air purifier in my room. I really hated being there though because it just drove me nuts the constant loud noise and smell of diesel and knowledge about all the pollutants, too!

That's good that youtube works for you. What kind of videos do you put on? :)

From what Googling I did, air purifiers are completely ineffective. Even industrial sized ones in factories etc do nothing. All roads lead to the rope, my friend. :)

Usually comedy stuff that I've seen/heard a thousand times. It comforts me most. Ricky Gervais podcasts, Frasier episodes. The hour or two before sleep used to be my favourite part of the day. I'd fantasise and maladaptive daydream a lot as I drifted off to sleep. The only times I can't sleep is if I have to do something the next day, and anxiety kicks in.

Well... all it's doing is passing as much of the air in the room through a HEPA filter as it can (and some other filters too) to remove particulate matter. It's a similar idea to a cigarette filter, just more thorough I guess. Why wouldn't it work? I actually also had a carbon monoxide alarm in my room to see if it ever picked up any concerning readings, but thankfully it never did!

Ah I see, interesting about the comedy shows and stuff :) What do you mean by maladaptive daydream? Those two comedy shows you listed are cool yeah - my favourite comedy ever is Red Dwarf ^_^

And yeah the more I have the next day the harder I find it to get to sleep.

Because there's far too much toxic air for it to process, so it has no effect. Living near a main road is living near a 24/7 toxin factory. You can get gadgets to read the quality of air, but they're expensive af, I think.

I love Red Dwarf too. Favourite series? Haven't watched it in years but I spent a couple of years drifting off to sleep to Red Dwarf DVDs, for sure. I especially liked the first two series. They have a really serene, sequestered feel to them. What's more calming than the idea of being stranded on a spaceship in deep space, the last living human? :) But it also has the warm, cosy feels that a sitcom provides. The characters don't change, it's warm and happy and is a good fascimile for having friends.

I'd have thought an extrovert wouldn't suffer from anxiety-induced insomnia like that. But it can also be excitement/anticipation for the next day, I think.

Well, I did always keep my windows closed or close to closed during busy times. I also heard that particulate matter tends to be lower down (because it's heavier than air) so I put the purifier on the floor. I felt like with the movement of air into my room being so slow, it was probably having a reasonable impact. It's very hard to say for sure though.

Maladaptive daydreaming sounds interesting but yeah I'd never heard of that before. I think I do have avoidant personality disorder though and that involves a lot of daydreaming too.

Fave Red Dwarf series... hm! 5 is the one that springs to mind, although they're mostly pretty good I think!

And really extroversion mostly just means I am energized by being around others. But I still have quite bad anxiety and often things like that or the people being unfriendly can outweigh that and make me hide away.

My MBTI personality type is ENFP so I can be quite sensitive to stuff like that.

I'm not a Harry Potter fan but this is one of the nicest ones I've found so far :)
