these are story driven games, which I think is a problem.

meaning once the game story has ended there isn't much left to do.

maybe doing mayham in the game should generate story or something like that,
or maybe some moneymaxing mechanics where you can buy skyscrapers.
maybe minigames like racing and FPS.
 
Infamous 2 had this really good concept where every action you take makes you either more morally good or more morally evil and that would affect the character and the world around him. Then the storyline would match the path that you are on.

I mean you can sum that up for pretty much every non-sandbox game, can’t you?

There’s a shit ton of problems regarding modern games, and even though gameplay is paramount, I think the core issue is in the writing.
