Any resources you recommend that can link to help me do this properly and consistently?
i dont have a link or an page at hand, i ll try to write some random hints down that helped me:
-set a timer for 15 mins and stick to it, even if the urge to do something else comes. also gives an feeling of accomplishment ("I managed to do 5/10/15 mins today") try also to build a habit, do it every day.
-focus on your breath, breathe through your nose with slow deep breaths in a 4-7-8 pattern
4sec deep inhale - 7 sec hold - 8 sec slow exhale. the body somehow relaxes during the exhale
- see your mind as that restless little monkey that it is, it will never stop to blabber and get distracted, but it is ok to get distracted. if distractions happen accept it gently and refocus on your breath
- i have adhd and and am very prone to sensory distractions like sound and light. i used a sleeping mask at times and at the moment i do meditate in my bathroom which i can turn completely dark. find the way you like best (sitting, lying in your bed, while walking in the woods or whatever, with or without an app, focusing on counting numbers or a mantra or just the breathe )
- external sounds can be distracting for me but i reframed them as "extra weight" during a session and try to get back to the breath when they distract me
if you do it right and dive into the calm state, it can happen that things from the subconcious arise. memories, pleasant and unpleasant things from the past. if that happens - congrats - your brain started the cleaning process - think of it as emotional pop ups.
You wouldnt go crazy if you had a popup coming up right now in the browser, you'd just be bothered a bit and click it away.
observe but do not get scared, just observe and accept that it happened. forgive yourself or the involved persons, let go and focus back on the breath. Taking notes and talking about the bad memories that popped up with a friend or therapist is optional.
Good luck, i hope it can help you
PS: If you're super sedentary and in full LDAR mode and start it, it can be a bit overwhelming and pull you into the air, like you're flying away with a balloon. Some light movement (walking, riding a bike, a bit of fitness) can help to stay more grounded.
