Yes, but depending on your service provider you can do things like what I described, which is basically a payment plan. With a warranty and protective casing, you're pretty much just paying $30 a month to have a high-end phone for 2 years regardless of what happens.
In the past, I've dropped my phone on the street in the rain where it got driven over by cars and then I found it the next day and I just removed the protective glass, replaced it, and put the case back on, and it worked for 3 more years.
