How do music bands get formed?

Genuine question, how does it happen, especially before the internet and social media. Not a lot of people play instruments, let alone are talented.

And even then you'd need different instruments, same genre and good group cohesion, both socially and musically. Just seems like a 1 in a million type of thing. Not to mention, most bands dont become popular.

People would put notices in music magazines or newspapers or in musical instrument shops
You have to be absolutely determined which is good as it prevents a lot of shit music being created
I wrote lots of songs but was too mentally fucked up to succeed
