How did Hinduism function in Indonesia before Islam became the majority religion in the region? How different was it from India?

I don't know if there is anyone on the forum who is well read about the topic but it just randomly popped into my head and I'm curious to hear if anybody has answers

And to expand on the title question, how does Hinduism function in the modern day within Indonesia, now that Islam is the religion of the vast majority?

i know far less on hinduism than the abrahamic religions, so take my answer with a grain of salt

Hinduism in Indonesia is and was not exactly the same as hinduism in India as it merged with the local culture and thus had elements of animism, superficial aspects are also different.

nowadays, more than 3/4 of the hindus on Indonesia are concentrated on one province, Bali, which is also an island. It's the only province with a hindu majority. no way hinduism is going away there anytime soon, Indonesia wouldn't allow that since its a tourist hub, it would be nothing special if it became muslim like the rest of indonesia.

Like in China I suppose. Buddhism lost any meaning to Nepal.
