I wouldn't say that egalitarianism and individualism are necessarily at odds, as there isn’t a real binary opposition. Egalitarianism is about how resources, rights, and status are distributed. Individualism is about where moral priority is placed (individual vs group). You can have egalitarian individualist systems (liberal democracies) and hierarchical collectivist ones (corporatism for example). I do agree that superficially, collectivism may appear more aligned with what one would call slave-minded, but the issue is that this is heavily contingent upon the manner in which individualism manifests itself; you could have a respectable ideal for it that calls for embarking upon a path of self-mastery, which is positive if done correctly.

The issue is, however, individualism typically manifests as the contemporary hyper-individualistic type, rather than the meaningful, moral, and virtuous path that would involve a better understanding of the "self." I personally disagree with this form of individualism as well, since the self is as shallow as a puddle of urine, but that is mostly tangential to my point here — which is that, at the very least, the ideal form of individualism sets its sights upon a respectable end goal in theory. This is different from the aforementioned superficial individualism which commonly emerges in the form of hedonism, consumerism, and an endless sprint on the hedonic treadmill, as well as disregard for the wellbeing of others in favor of self-furtherance and indulgence. One may argue this is the inevitable conclusion of individualism in general, but this is a different point.

Egalitarianism itself is also a major issue here since the modern notion of it is flawed, and misunderstands the concept of complementarity; these egalitarian ideas that are common in modern liberal contexts are a detrimental ailment to these societies, as they do not even aim for a fair form of equality in many cases.

And yes, most people don't consciously deliberate these philosophies, but their ideas underpin their entire lives. All societies have default pathways that most people follow because humans are habitual, socially influenced, and constrained by economics and institutions.
