Moreover, it is remarkable that we detect significant results for the likelihood of marriage in the brother group analyses, by virtue of the fact that brothers are more likely to be similar to one another than non-related individuals. In our sample, average height differences among brother groups (0.0 cm) are smaller than average height differences among non-related individuals of the same cohort (0.4 cm). Cultural and social norms would in all likelihood be stronger within families than among non-related individuals (Eaves et al., 2013). It is also likely that other, unobserved aspects of attractiveness (facial features, weight, intelligence) are also more similar among brothers. Our study therefore provides strong evidence that height is a direct determinant of the likelihood of being ever-married (although not of the timing of marriage).
