I believe Rockwell addressed this issue at one point and argued that while socialism worked for Germans, who are collectivists by nature, it was incompatible with the Anglo-American national ethos, which was better suited to capitalism.

The overt, swastika-wearing, Hitler-quoting American Nazi movement under and around Rockwell never broke ~500 people nationwide who would even admit affiliation, and the hard-core, active, uniformed cadre was almost always under 100.
They were loud, photogenic, and deliberately provocative, which made them seem bigger than they were, but in raw numbers they were a fringe-of-the-fringe group even within the broader segregationist/far-right scene (where the Klan factions alone were 10–30× larger).
