I was out of high school. No money for college. Applied to hundreds of places in that time for work. Mostly got ignored because I didn't have a work history or references. Had a few interviews, but no HR lady was about to stick her neck out for me.
So I talked to a Navy recruiter. It was bad enough that he lied to me through his teeth, but his lies were so stupid that it was clear that he thought I was.
That's how I learned firsthand that they will say anything just to get you to sign up. That creeped me out. What, you can't get recruits by just being honest? Apparently, not.
And because I refused to sign, the recruiter decided to chew me out like I was a dog that just pissed on his rug.
Had friends who went into the military. All of them dead now.
Got a lot of respect for people who do serve, though. Takes a special breed.

unlike most people in this forum, im a veteran. i served in the us army for 6 years. i joined when i was 17. i never deployed i was lucky. and if im being honest, joining the army was both the best decision ive ever made in my life, and at the same time the worst thing that ever happened to me.

I did apply and did get rejected, even though they supposedly take everyone, just more proof of how much of a subhuman i am. But looking back, it was a blessing in disguise that they didnt take me
General asociality like stuttering getting caught on sentences. When I told her about my life and why I wanted to join the army I unfortunately told her the truth about my frustrations with my life and she diagnosed me with anger issues and told me I was unfit for service. It was around 5 years ago now.

When I was young and patriotic, yes. As of now, absolutely not. The only thing appealing about the army are the pensions and help the state gives you after service.
