Yes. I've been a couple of times for holidays with my family. The cities are overwhelming and busy. I would recommend you avoid them. The ski areas are extremely cool and comfy (I'm Australian, so I never see snow here). I'd recommend going to a small resort at a time of year with minimal tourists.
The culture is nice. Everyone is polite, clean and quiet in my experience. You would probably have very little chance of ascending there though, largely due to the language barrier, but also because Japanese people treat non-Japanese like outsiders (it's hard to explain, but you will always feel like a tourist there). Very few speak English competently, so you probably couldn't hold any in depth conversations. The interactions are usually very awkward as a result.

When I was in Hokkaido, people in Hakodate were way friendlier. Food is healthy, just stick to healthier traditional Japanese food instead of Western-style Jap food.
